Massachusetts Cultural Council's Grants for Creative Individuals is an unrestricted $5,000 grant — not tied to a specific project, with no accounting required for how you spend it — open across disciplines including music, composition and performance alongside crafts, dance, design, film, literature, theater and visual art. The goal is simply to support working artists and culture bearers, not to fund a particular recording or tour.

You need to be a full-year Massachusetts resident, both for the calendar year you're applying in and through the following June 30, with a real physical address in the state. Unlike some of the council's other programs, these categories don't rotate by year, so musicians can apply in any cycle rather than waiting for a "music year."

Applying means submitting an artist narrative about your practice, one to five work samples (capped combined at five pages, minutes or images), and keeping your council profile current; if you're claiming a funding priority such as an anti-poverty program, you'll need to attach proof. For FY2027, the window opens September 10, 2026, with an information session on September 22 and a deadline of October 27, 2026; awards are announced the following March.

Reviewers score applications, and the council balances the final list by geography and funding priorities, breaking ties by career stage, discipline, or random selection.
