Sound Recording Grant

This pays part of the bill for making a record you intend to sell. Two streams run side by side: an EP or singles stream, covering one to six professionally recorded songs under about 40 minutes, and an LP stream, needing at least six songs and more than 30 minutes. Either way the recording has to be headed for commercial release rather than made for its own sake.

Money comes as matched funding, never the whole cost. You can claim up to half your eligible expenses, capped at CAD 10,000 for an EP or singles project and CAD 15,000 for an album, so you need the other half lined up before you apply. Payment is split, with 80 percent released on approval and the last 20 percent once the project is finished and the final report has been accepted.

Where the work happens matters. Recording and mixing costs only count if they take place in Saskatchewan with Saskatchewan residents on the session; mastering and manufacturing can be done anywhere. An out-of-province producer is allowed, including their travel and fees, provided the recording itself stays in the province. Fees are capped, at CAD 400 per musician per track and CAD 500 per track for in-house producing, engineering and studio time. Anything already funded by SK Arts or SaskCulture is out.

The application asks for a project plan, a timeline, a detailed budget and an account of who the audience is and how you will reach them. Assessors reward specificity and realism over ambition alone. Be aware of the odds: the programme reports an approval rate of 17 percent in 2024-25, and results arrive roughly ten weeks after the deadline.
