Statens Værksteder for Kunst (SVFK) — Residency

Statens Værksteder for Kunst gives professional artists, including musicians working with sound, exclusive access to its workshop and studio facilities in Denmark for up to six months at a time. What's on offer is purely practical workspace — wood and metal workshops with full-time technical staff, plus other specialist workshops and their consultants — not promotion, press contacts, or curator introductions, and the organization is explicit that it won't help with those. You can't simply rent space here; you have to be granted a residency through application, and once you have one, that space is yours alone for the duration. It's for established professionals only, students aren't eligible, and musicians or sound artists from outside Denmark need to show a real connection to Danish cultural activity or a collaboration with a Danish artist. Anyone planning to weld in the metal workshop must first complete a mandatory safety course. Applying means putting together a single PDF: a project description capped at 1,500 keystrokes with spaces, visual documentation or sketches, a CV, and images of past work, with the visuals limited to ten pages. The page doesn't describe formal scoring criteria beyond fit with the facilities on offer. Decisions come back four to five weeks after each of the four annual deadlines, held in February, May, August, and November.

One thing to pin down before you apply, if sound is your medium: the facilities the official page actually describes are material and craft workshops — wood and metal with full-time technicians, plus other specialist workshops and their consultants — and it names no dedicated sound or audio facility in Copenhagen. Sound projects have historically been routed through a partnership with Sound Art Lab in Struer, a different city, and that partnership could not be confirmed as running in 2026. Ask SVFK which workshops are open to your project rather than assuming audio provision on site.
