SXSW's music showcase application is open to artists of any genre, from anywhere, whether signed or unsigned — there's no formal eligibility checklist beyond needing a SXSW ID account and a primary contact who'll actually respond to emails. If you're invited, you get an official festival slot in Austin (the 2027 edition runs 15–21 March) plus a Showcasing Artist Badge, which carries Platinum-level access plus some artist-only perks SXSW doesn't spell out publicly; you don't need to buy a badge separately to apply or perform.

There's an application fee, paid at checkout on SXSW's own site, though the current page doesn't print the dollar figure — confirm it in the cart before submitting. The page also makes no mention of a cash-payment alternative to a showcase slot; if that's offered to some acts, it isn't stated where artists apply, so don't count on it without checking directly with SXSW.

Applying is entirely online: create a SXSW ID, complete the Showcasing Artist Application with every required field, pay, and confirm. A confirmation email should land within 48 hours. SXSW reviews on originality, technical ability and songwriting, but career trajectory matters just as much — social media following, streaming numbers, live experience and upcoming milestones like releases or tour dates all factor in, and multiple reviewers look at each submission. The deadline is 20 November.
