About this opportunity
This grant pays emerging composers to actually finish a chamber-orchestra piece they've started, rather than funding a piece from scratch. Up to eight finalists each receive a $3,000 completion grant; four of those finalists are then chosen as winners, invited to a two-day rehearsal session in San Francisco (with a $600 travel stipend and hotel covered), and their finished pieces get a world premiere. This round's four premiered works will also go onto an ARTZenter recording and be considered for publication by Universal Edition.
It's aimed squarely at composers early in their careers: you need to be enrolled in a US composition degree program, or to have finished one within the last three years without currently being enrolled. First-time applicants are prioritised, no one can win more than twice, and past winners wait a full year before reapplying; works already completed, performed or read elsewhere aren't eligible.
Applying means submitting a 50-to-75-measure draft scored for a specific sinfonietta lineup (strings, winds, harp and limited percussion — timpani, xylophone and a few other instruments aren't allowed), a MIDI realisation of that draft, one finished 10-to-15-minute piece with a recording, and a short one-page PDF answering five set questions. There are three deadlines across this round — December 15, 2026, April 15, 2027 and July 15, 2027 — each running on its own notification and session schedule. The panel says it favours music that uses the ensemble's distinct character, is dramatically shaped for an audience, avoids heavy extended technique, and reveals a clear contemporary voice.
