City of Munich — New Music Project Funding

This Munich city grant backs concerts, concert series and small festivals built around new music: contemporary classical, experimental work, sound art, improvisation, and electronic or electroacoustic music. It does not cover staged music theatre, which has its own fund. You qualify as a professional musician or composer based in Munich or its wider transit catchment, whether you apply alone, as a group, or through an association active in the city's independent new-music scene. Organisations that already receive the city's institutional funding are excluded, and the department is actively encouraging applications from women and non-binary artists, noting men have historically dominated the programme.

Support comes as a straightforward grant, in two tiers. Anything under €1,000 can be requested at any time, with no deadline. Amounts between €1,000 and €10,000 follow two fixed rounds a year: 15 October for projects running the following January to June, and 15 April for projects in the second half of the year. You will need a completed application form, a project description and a cost-and-financing plan, combined into a single PDF under 5MB and emailed in before the deadline (a postal copy is also accepted). There is no jury: Department of Culture staff check that the programme is genuinely new or experimental, that Munich-based musicians are meaningfully involved, and that the work meets a professional standard, then decide administratively. The project must not have started before you apply.
