Finzi Trust — Young Musicians’ Fund (deadlines 1 Feb / 1 Sep)

The Young Musicians' Fund helps people aged 25 and under who need money to keep participating in, studying or practising music. Awards made so far have ranged from £250 to £7,000 and have covered buying instruments, short courses, recording costs and performances. The Trust has committed no less than £50,000 a year to young musicians across grants to both individuals and organisations.

Organisations can apply too, as long as the money goes solely to under-25s. The fund won't support full-time education or postgraduate courses, and it won't consider retrospective applications — if you've already spent the money, it's too late. Grants can only be used for the project you described, and normally have to be spent within six months of receipt.

You apply on a downloadable form, emailed to the Trust by 1 February or 1 September. The grants sub-committee meets shortly after each deadline and anything arriving later waits for the next round; you should hear within two months. Two references are required and are taken up before an offer is confirmed. If you're applying to buy an instrument and you have a teacher, your first referee must be that teacher; otherwise it should be someone who can speak to your musical ability. The second must have known you for at least two years and be of professional standing. Family members can't act as referees, nor can anyone with a stake in the outcome — including a teacher who would be selling you the instrument.

Applications need full artistic and budget detail, including other funding you're seeking. You have to show commitment, ability and real need. Trustees' decisions are final and no feedback is given, and a final report is a condition of any grant.
