Fromm Foundation Composer Fellowship (Composers Conference) 2027

Two weeks on a farm in New Hampshire, writing a piece and then hearing it played properly. The Fromm Foundation Composer Fellowship places up to eight composers at the Composers Conference, held at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in Boscawen. Fellows take part in seminars, rehearsals, workshops and public colloquia with that year's guest composers, and each has a work publicly performed and professionally recorded by the Conference Ensemble. There is also an option to write a collaborative piece with the performance institute's fellows.

The fellowship covers tuition, room and board in full, and there is no application fee. It is not a cash stipend: what you get is the residency, the performance and the recording. Accommodation is a two-person suite with its own bathroom, three meals a day, rehearsal rooms with grand pianos and separate practice spaces. Attendance is compulsory for the entire two-week block; partial stays are not allowed.

No nationality or age limits are published. Past fellows may reapply, but first-time applicants are given preference, and the conference explicitly encourages women, trans, non-binary and queer composers and composers of colour to apply.

Applications go through New Music Engine: two works in any medium, PDF scores with accompanying audio, and no links that require a download. Electronic works are accepted for judging, though at least one acoustic instrumental piece is encouraged; the new work you write for the conference itself may not use electronics. The first round is judged anonymously, and materials carrying any identifying mark are not reviewed.
