Klitgaarden Refugium – Klitgaarden Foundation Artist Grants

Klitgaarden Refugium sits in Skagen, at the northern tip of Jutland, and its artist grants buy you two uninterrupted weeks to work. Living costs are covered, including three meals a day cooked on site from local ingredients, and you get access to shared facilities and to one of the retreat's three studios. You contribute DKK 200 per day yourself and arrange and pay for your own travel.

The grants are open to recognised artists in every discipline, music included, alongside visual art, literature and performing arts. In practice that means membership of one of the Council of Danish Artists' member organisations, or being able to show a comparable professional background. Recent rounds have gone to composers as well as writers, ceramicists and visual artists. You cannot apply if you have had a similar stay at Klitgaarden within the previous two years.

The application is a single PDF of no more than five standard pages, emailed to the refuge. It has to state which art form you are applying in, which artists' organisation you belong to, and whether you have stayed before and when; then a short project description, a CV of at most three pages, and a limited amount of supporting material.

The guidelines do not publish assessment criteria. A three-member committee appointed by the Klitgaarden Foundation together with the Council of Danish Artists decides. You will hear within eight weeks, and once awarded you have a year to take the stay before it lapses.
