Pasadena Vocal Competition 2027

This is cash and exposure for classical singers, run since 2016 by a small Pasadena nonprofit and funded by the Pasadena Area Opera Trust. It is squarely an opera competition: the organisation exists to support rising opera singers and to build local audiences for the art form, and past winners have gone on to Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera and the Metropolitan Opera.

The 2027 edition puts more than $25,000 on the table. That is shared between eight finalists and up to four career grant recipients, with a first prize of $7,000. Two named awards sit alongside the main prizes: an audience favourite award funded by the Tony Gaudio Foundation, and the Chevalier Award, sponsored by Courtney B. Vance, for the best video submission of an aria by a composer from the African Diaspora — so at least part of the entry is judged on recorded video.

Applications open on 1 October 2026 and close at midnight on Friday 13 November. Finalists sing at a concert in Pasadena on 6 March 2027 at 7pm, which is free and open to the public, in front of a judging panel listed on the site.

Be aware that the competition page publishes almost nothing before applications open: age limits, residency requirements, repertoire rules, entry fees and the materials you will need to submit are all absent. Check the application itself on 1 October before planning around it.
