America's Music Funding Year Doesn't Stop After Autumn. It Changes Shape.

31 confirmed US music funding deadlines fall between November and January, twice October's count. Only 8 are grants. What the American winter calendar holds, and how to prepare for rounds that haven't announced a date yet.

Key findings

  • GrantGigs lists 31 confirmed US music funding deadlines between 1 November and 31 January, twice October's 15.
  • Only 8 of those 31 winter deadlines are grants; the other 23 are competitions, showcase calls, residencies and fellowships.
  • A month ago the same November–January window held 11 confirmed US deadlines. Dates go up as deadlines approach, so a thin month is usually an unannounced one.
  • The median US award ceiling is $5,000 for the second month running, and 25 of the 38 US listings with a stated amount cap at $10,000 or less.

Last month we told American readers there was no autumn rush to wait for. That held: October has 15 confirmed US deadlines out of 126 across every region we cover. What we got wrong was the next part. We described the months after October as thin. Four weeks later they aren't.

The US share of confirmed deadlines nearly triples after October

In October, American opportunities account for 12% of the confirmed deadlines on GrantGigs. From November to January they account for 33%. Europe's calendar thins out as winter arrives. The American calendar stays roughly level, at 9 to 15 confirmed deadlines a month through January.

In December and January, America lists more confirmed deadlines than all four European regions combined. For an American artist, winter isn't downtime.

This calendar is also still filling in. On 1 September, the November–January window held 11 confirmed US deadlines. It now holds 31. Nine of those are listings we added in September. The other 22 were already on the site, and at least 11 of them gained a confirmed date during the month as funders published their next round. A further 10 American listings are funders that have signalled a new round without a date yet. That's 10 of the 23 such listings in the whole database, or 43%, although US listings are only 23% of everything active.

Those ten are worth knowing by name, because each will produce a deadline on short notice. They include the Arkansas Arts Council's Mini Grants, which are due to reopen this month, InterMusic SF's Musical Grant Program, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts' Emergency Grants, the Wyoming Arts Council's Community Support Grant and Music Movement's grants portal. None has a confirmed date on GrantGigs today. When the dates appear, the gap to the deadline may be short.

What this means in practice: when you look at January today and see nine deadlines, treat that as a minimum.

Winter in the US is for showcases, competitions and residencies, not grants

Grants make up 43 of the 94 active US listings, close to half. In the November–January window they drop to 8 of 31. The rest of the winter calendar is a different kind of support.

This matters because the applications are different jobs. A grant narrative argues for a project. A showcase submission is a live recording, a short bio and a reason a festival programmer should book you. A residency application is a work sample and a plan for the time. Artists who prepare one grant proposal and wait for another grant round will skip most of what the US winter offers.

Fewer grants doesn't mean less money. Several of the non-grant entries pay: competitions with cash prizes, a $1,500 residency stipend, a $5,000 fellowship. Others pay in time, space or audience. For an artist planning 2027 releases, a showcase slot in March or a month at a residency in spring may do more for the next grant application than another small cash award would. Both build the track record that larger funders look for.

The mix of US funders is changing too. In September, a text match on organiser names put 25 of 61 US listings with a state, city or county agency, about four in ten. Now it's 27 of 94. Agency listings didn't shrink. The pool grew by 33, and 31 of those came from festivals, foundations, competitions and other non-agency organisers. Treat this as directional, since it depends on how organisers name themselves.

Most US awards are small, and the median hasn't moved

The median ceiling is $5,000, the same as in September, now on 38 listings instead of 25. The mean is $20,571 because two large programmes pull it up. Two-thirds of US awards with a stated amount top out at $10,000. Build a 2027 budget around one or two awards of that size plus in-kind support, not around a single large prize.

These six illustrate the pattern; they're not the whole list. The rest are on the US grants page, residencies and competitions.

What this means for applicants

Build a showcase kit before you write another grant narrative. Four of the 31 winter deadlines are festival showcase calls and eight are competitions. Between them they want a live clip, a short bio, a strong recording and recent numbers. Plenty of artists put that kit together in a rush two days before a deadline. Do it this month and you can enter several of the twelve without losing a weekend to each. Our guide to touring and showcase funding covers what programmers look for.

Work from last year's dates, not this year's listings. Ten US funders on GrantGigs have announced a round without a date. Many others haven't announced anything yet. If a programme you want closed in February last year, draft the application in November using last year's guidelines. When the new date goes up, you'll be editing, not starting from scratch. There's a simple system for this in how to never miss a grant deadline.

Use winter for in-kind support, and save the cash asks for spring. A residency or showcase slot this winter gives you new work, documentation and a line on your CV. Those are what spring grant panels judge you on. With a $5,000 median, spring cash awards are modest and contested. Panels tend to back the applicant with recent, documented work over the one with a good plan and nothing new to show. If you haven't done a residency before, start with how artist residencies work.

Outlook

Next month we'll check whether the November–January window keeps filling at this rate, and whether the 10 undated US rounds publish their dates. We'll also report on the first US deadlines for the spring 2027 cycle. February and March currently show five confirmed US deadlines between them, which by this month's evidence is a floor, not a forecast. For the other side of the Atlantic, read the European edition.

Frequently asked questions

When are music grant deadlines in the US?
There's no single season. On GrantGigs, confirmed US deadlines run at 9 to 15 a month from October 2026 through January 2027, 46 in total across those four months. State arts councils, foundations and festivals set their own cycles, so check each funder's history, not a national calendar.
How much is a typical music grant in the US?
Among the 38 active US listings with a stated amount, the median ceiling is $5,000 and 25 cap at $10,000 or less. The average is higher, $20,571, because two large programmes skew it. For budgeting, the median is the more useful figure.
Are there music funding opportunities open in winter in the US?
Yes. GrantGigs lists 31 confirmed US deadlines between November 2026 and January 2027. Only 8 are grants. The rest are competitions, festival showcase calls such as SXSW and Treefort, residencies such as Yaddo and Ucross, and fellowships.

Methodology

Data comes from the GrantGigs database of human-checked music funding listings, pulled on 1 October 2026: 94 active US listings out of 402 worldwide, all verified in the past 90 days. Deadlines are cited only where the funder has confirmed a date. Structured amounts cover 38 of 94 US listings, and medians are per currency.
