Ucross Foundation — Fall 2027 Artist Residency

Ucross gives composers uninterrupted time on a working ranch in northern Wyoming — no teaching, no public showing, nothing you are obliged to deliver. Stays run from two to six weeks. Around 115 artists pass through each year, and at any one moment there are about ten people on site: typically four writers, four visual artists and two composers, which makes the music places genuinely competitive.

There is no charge for the residency. You get a private studio, a bedroom with linens and weekly housekeeping, wifi and cell service, and meals — lunch delivered to your studio, dinner together at six, Monday to Friday, with provisions on hand for breakfasts and weekends. A stipend of USD 1,500 is offered toward costs. You supply your own working materials and pay your own travel to Sheridan, Wyoming.

It is open to composers, writers, visual artists, choreographers, performance and interdisciplinary artists, and collaborative teams, from anywhere in the world. You need professional standing in your field, but the foundation encourages emerging as well as established applicants.

There are two intakes a year. The Fall session (August to early December) accepts applications from 1 November to 15 January; Spring (February to early June) runs 1 May to 15 July. Applications go through Submittable. Music and sound applicants send three to five audio files, each eight minutes or shorter and under 200 MB, or up to three Vimeo links; scores are welcome alongside. Ucross states that the work sample and the project proposal are the most significant parts of an application, and that your samples should represent the genre you actually intend to work in while you are there.
