About this opportunity

A grant for teaching one person properly. Alabama's arts council funds a master traditional artist and an apprentice to work together so that a living skill is passed on. Music sits comfortably here — Sacred Harp singing and fiddling are among the forms the council names, alongside Yoruba drumming, pottery, oak basketry, Vietnamese lion dance and piñata making.

Either the master artist or the apprentice submits the application, not both, and only one application per person per year. Activities must take place in Alabama and individual applicants must be legally present in the state. Anyone who has been master or apprentice on this grant for three consecutive years — 2024, 2025 and 2026 — must sit out two years before applying again.

For FY2027 the request range rose to $2,000 to $4,000, paid as a single instalment, with no matching funds required, which is a real advantage over the council's project grants. The application window is 1 July to 1 September 2026, closing promptly at 5pm, and the work itself runs between 1 January and 30 September 2027. Work samples are required from the master artist, and from an apprentice continuing a previously funded apprenticeship. Both digital and paper forms are accepted.

The council assesses against its standard criteria — the quality of the artistic experience, how the artists themselves benefit, community and cultural representation, accessibility, and how likely the plan is to actually happen. Materials submitted by artists are periodically transferred to the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
