About this opportunity

This is recording money: singles, EPs and albums, plus the marketing that surrounds a release. Eligible costs run from pre-production and studio time through producer, engineer and musician fees, mixing, mastering, equipment rental and design, to website work, publicists, radio trackers, video content and advertising. Manufacturing and merchandise are each capped at a quarter of your request, consultant and grant-writing fees at a tenth. Management and legal fees, equipment purchases, food, local travel and release-party costs are not covered, and nothing spent before you submit counts.

There are three tiers, gated by career evidence rather than need. The $2,500 tier is open to any Newfoundland and Labrador musician and suits songwriting or pre-production trips, a marketing campaign or a single. The $5,000 tier requires two commercially released songs in the past five years plus one of touring, award recognition or press coverage. The $10,000 tier asks you to meet three of nine markers — 20,000 streams, 5,000 followers, thirty shows in three years, a sync or curated-playlist placement, a professional team, and similar. If your career doesn't fit the boxes, MusicNL asks you to call first.

You need six months of provincial residency, and at least 80% of the project must be unreleased, mostly original material. Recording is expected to happen in an NL studio; work done elsewhere needs a rationale, and non-NL vendors are reimbursed at 80% except in the top tier.

Expect partial funding — the budget is limited and you must show other revenue sources. Payment is 75% up front, 25% on the final report. Jurors score against a published rubric, and projects must finish within a year, with no extensions.
