About this opportunity

Velferden runs self-directed residencies at a former mining site in Sokndal, on Norway's south-west coast, for stays of one to three months between February and June 2027. What's on offer is a free private bedroom in a shared guesthouse, round-the-clock access to your own studio, use of larger project and workshop spaces, and some practical support settling in — but no stipend. Velferden says plainly that it doesn't offer financial support, so you need to be able to cover your own travel and living costs for the whole stay. It's aimed at working professionals, people with relevant training or experience in their field, music and sound-based practice included, rather than full-time students, who aren't eligible for 2027. You'll also need valid travel insurance and the ability to arrange your own visa and travel to Norway; this isn't an artists-at-risk programme and can't sponsor immigration cases. Applying means sending a single PDF, under 10MB and in landscape orientation, with your contact details, preferred dates, a CV, a statement of up to 3,000 characters on your work and why you want to come, and a portfolio of up to ten pages, linking out to any audio or video. English, Norwegian, Danish or Swedish are all fine. There's no published scoring system — Velferden describes the residency as best suited to self-reliant professionals who can make good use of an unstructured working stay. Applications are due 14 November 2026, at midnight wherever you are.
