About this opportunity

This is one of the most prestigious open-ended residencies in new music: a twelve-month stay in Berlin for composers and sound artists who already have an established voice, not for artists still in training or who have only just finished their studies. There''s no age ceiling and doctoral students are welcome, but German nationals only qualify if they''ve lived abroad for at least six years, and anyone currently based mainly in Germany is excluded unless they only moved there within the past fifteen months; past fellows can''t reapply. What you get is substantial: a monthly stipend, a furnished apartment, economy-class travel extended to a partner and children who join you for the full year, insurance if you need it, and optional German lessons, with larger housing and help finding schooling for families. Applying is entirely online and in English: a personal-data form followed by an application with one PDF of up to 15MB (CV, scores, press) plus links to three work examples a jury can actually listen to or watch — broken or missing links can get an application excluded outright, so check them before submitting. After the December deadline, applications go through months of eligibility screening before international specialist juries meet in Berlin between March and May to decide; the programme draws hundreds of applications for a handful of places, including just one collective slot for up to three musicians this cycle, so a rejection says little about the work itself.

Know who's reviewing — and what has won before.

For opportunities approaching their deadline, Pro members get a researched briefing: who sits on the jury, what they care about, and what past winning projects looked like. Briefings are prepared roughly 5 to 10 weeks before each deadline, while there's still time to shape your application.
