About this opportunity

Five artists split five ten-week residencies at Narva Art Residency, on Estonia's border with Russia, each one built around a single sense - sight, touch, smell, taste or hearing - as a way into thinking about what a border actually is. Hearing is explicitly one of the five, and the surrounding brief talks about shared sounds as a starting point, so this suits sound artists and musicians as much as visual ones. Each resident gets a €2,000 creative grant, €1,000 toward production costs, €300 toward travel, and free private accommodation with shared kitchen and working space, plus access to the Kreenholm Manufactory and the Narva Venice Embassy, bikes, and, in warmer months, a small boat. There is production help, translation support and mentoring built in, and you can propose a public event or give a lecture at the Estonian Academy of Arts while you are there. Eligibility is tightly geographic: you need to permanently live in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Åland, Latvia or Lithuania - Estonian residents cannot apply to their own programme. You pick which of five ten-week windows across 2027 work for you, download and complete an application form in English, and submit it through the online system only; emailed applications are not read. The deadline is 25 October 2026 at 23:59 Estonian time. The organisers do not publish specific judging criteria beyond a jury review, but they are candid that they can tell when an application has leaned on AI rather than a real, edited voice.
