Statens Kunstfond – Arbejdslegater for musik (work grants)

A work grant from the Danish Arts Foundation buys you time to develop your own music, and nothing else. This is deliberately not project funding: the guidelines state it goes solely to the development of your artistic work, not to tours, releases, commissions or other jobs. All genres qualify, and the committee reads "creative artist" broadly — composers, songwriters, sound artists, arrangers and producers are all named as eligible.

You do not ask for a figure. The music committee sets the amount itself, and may decide to award a three-year grant rather than a single payment. Past awards are published on the foundation's site if you want a sense of the range before applying. Grants are made to individuals, but bands are welcome: each member applies separately, ticks the group box in the portal, and the committee then assesses those applications together.

The application itself is short. A mandatory template document, downloaded, completed and attached as a PDF; one or two recent tracks as MP3s, with your strongest listed first; and optionally up to ten pages of supporting material. Everything is submitted through the Tilskudsportalen portal, which requires a Danish MitID login and does not work on a phone. The site and the forms are in Danish.

Assessment rests on artistic talent and output. The committee says it looks above all for a clear artistic intention — a distinct idea, music with a character of its own — and for craft, meaning the ability to actually realise that idea. You hear back within twelve weeks of the deadline.
