Finnish Composers (Suomen Säveltäjät) – Travel grants (application period 2–31 Jan 2027)

This reimburses travel costs for art-music composers, and its structure matters: it is a loss guarantee paid after the fact, not money up front. You claim for trips already taken since the previous round — the January 2027 window (2–31 January) covers journeys made from 1 September 2026 onward. Rounds run twice a year, in January and August.

It is open to Finnish composers and to composers permanently working in Finland. Membership of the Society is not required; any professionally active art-music composer may apply.

Awards are discretionary and small: EUR 50–950 per composer per year, and the 950 ceiling only applies if you are claiming for more than one trip — a single trip is capped at 500. The grant covers at most 80% of total travel costs, and only tickets and accommodation: second-class rail, bus, economy flights with carbon offsetting, local transport, hotels. Using your own car may be reimbursed at roughly the cost of the equivalent train ticket. Low-emission transport is encouraged wherever possible.

Priority goes to travel tied to premieres and significant performances of your own work. Other work trips can be supported at the committee's discretion where there is a concrete professional reason; study trips, and residency or inspiration trips on their own, do not qualify. For orchestra and festival performances, support is only available if the organiser has declined to cover your costs when asked, and for a commissioned premiere the commissioner is expected to pay. You are also required to apply to other applicable sources, such as Taike project grants or Music Finland export support.

You apply on a web form that opens with the round, giving a description of each trip, a cost breakdown, and receipts — preferably one PDF per trip. A named committee decides and tells applicants individually. The form and guidelines are in Finnish.
