Rome Prize in Musical Composition
Offered by American Academy in Rome
Who can apply
U.S. citizens professionally committed to and currently working in musical composition.
About this opportunity
The American Academy in Rome's Rome Prize gives a composer dedicated time in Rome to work on new music, through a fellowship open only to U.S. citizens who are professionally committed to composition. It comes as a full-term stipend of 30,000 dollars for roughly ten months in residence, or a half-term stipend of 16,000 dollars for up to five months. Applying means putting together a CV with a full list of works, a one-page proposal addressing why a Rome residency specifically suits the project and what workspace it would need, scores and recordings — hosted online — for two or three compositions from the past five years, and three professional references, where only contact details are required rather than full letters. There's an application fee of 50 dollars if paid by 1 November, rising to 80 dollars after that, payable online by card or by check mailed to the Academy's New York office. The online portal and any hardcopy materials both have to be in by 11:59pm Pacific time on 15 November. The Academy doesn't publish how applications are judged or who sits on the composition jury, so applicants are working from the stated requirements rather than a scoring rubric.
