About this opportunity

Barcelona's Maria Canals International Piano Competition, now in its 72nd year, is open to pianists of any nationality aged 17 to 29 as of 1 January 2027. You can re-enter after a previous year, but not if you've already won First Prize, and you can't compete if you've studied with certain members of the pre-selection committee in the past three years — doing so disqualifies you automatically. The repertoire rules are specific and worth planning around: your programme across all rounds must include two works by Spanish composers, one of them Catalan, and at least one piece by a woman composer, played entirely from memory, with no more than two works by the same composer across the first three rounds. Registering costs €60, paid online through Muvac by 23 November 2026 at noon Barcelona time, and is non-refundable; if you're accepted, by 21 December, a further €140 participation fee is due by 31 December 2026, also non-refundable, with any international transfer charges on you. From roughly 60 entrants the competition narrows to a semi-final of six and a grand final of three, who perform with the Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya at the Palau de la Música Catalana. First prize is €25,000, four concerts with major Spanish orchestras, and a gold medal; second and third pay €10,000 and €6,000, with smaller sums for fourth through sixth place. The competition's own promotion describes total prizes exceeding €80,000, considerably more than the roughly €46,000 in individually listed amounts.
