About this opportunity
Support for organisations that put contemporary concert music in front of audiences — music written in roughly the last fifty years, with a stated preference for American composers. The programme runs two cycles. Performing groups (orchestras, chamber ensembles, choral and vocal ensembles, opera and dance companies, experimental groups) apply in spring; service and advocacy organisations, presenters, festivals, artist residency programmes, professional training schemes, libraries and archives apply in the autumn round that closes at the end of September. Money can go to general operating costs or to a specific project outside your usual programming.
Applications come from organisations, not individuals. You need non-profit status or a fiscal sponsor, at least two years of activity, professional-level work, and an operating budget of $10 million or less. Organisations based outside the United States can apply, but only for work by American composers. Jazz, pop, musical theatre, sacred and holiday programming, commissioning fees and commercial recording projects all fall outside the scope.
Grants generally run from $2,000 to $7,500, larger amounts are possible for bigger organisations or unusually significant projects, and the foundation will not award more than you requested. Funded activity has to fall between September and the following August.
The application is substantial: a proposal narrative, three years of organisational budgets on their template, three audio samples of live performances from the past three seasons, ideally a marked score, a three-year list of performances and repertoire, and board and funder lists. New applicants must request an account about a week before the deadline. Reviewers weigh artistic quality, the consistency of your commitment to contemporary music, financial capacity, demonstrated need, and community access.
