About this opportunity

A New York City grant for small ensembles and the organisations that present them. It funds one of three things — public performances, a new recording, or commissioning a new work — and every project has to reach an audience inside the five boroughs between January and December 2027. Chamber music here means two to ten musicians, one per part, usually without a conductor, spanning classical, jazz and world genres.

Ensembles need at least one member who is a US citizen or permanent resident living in the five boroughs, an annual operating budget under $250,000, and at least a year of history. Presenters must hold 501(c)(3) status — fiscal sponsors do not count — and apply alongside an eligible New York ensemble. Student groups, soloists with accompanists, opera, choral works and music written for staged works are all excluded.

Grants run from $7,500 to $20,000 and cover 100% of eligible expenses, with no match required; if the project costs more than $20,000 you explain how you will cover the difference. The full award is paid after the contract is signed, and it counts as taxable income.

Applications go through Submittable and need a written narrative, a budget on the supplied template, two audio samples of up to four minutes each, a past marketing sample, photos, and a memorandum of understanding with the composer where one is involved. An independent panel scores in two rounds — narrative 40%, budget 20%, work samples 40%. Panellists are told to weigh community impact most heavily: who the audience is, and how you will actually reach them.
