Oskar Öflund Foundation – Grants for science and culture

A Finnish foundation that funds public-benefit work in science and culture, alternating between the two: culture rounds — which include music, performing arts, film, literature and children's culture — fall in even years, while odd years go to scientific research. Musicians should therefore aim at an even-year round.

Awards top out at €8,000, so this suits a defined piece of work — a recording, a commission, a stretch of writing time, a production cost — rather than a full-scale campaign. The foundation asks for domestic Finnish activity, and does not publish a list of ineligible costs.

Applicants are individuals who have completed a master's-level degree or the equivalent, or working groups, in which case every member's details go into the form. The window is fixed and short: 15 January to 15 February each year, online only. The form itself must be written in Swedish or Finnish, though attachments may be in English — worth planning for if neither is your language. Referees submit their statements separately, by 28 February.

The board decides in late May, notifies applicants by email, pays in June or July, and publishes the list of recipients in August. One trap: an awarded grant has to be claimed through the online system before the end of the year or it lapses, and recipients must declare funding received elsewhere. The committee says it weighs whether you can realistically deliver the work, and how important, relevant and far-reaching it is.
