About this opportunity
A research and creation residency in Paris for artists and cultural professionals based outside France, run jointly by the Institut francais and the Cite internationale des arts. Performing arts and music are among the eligible fields, alongside visual art, photography, cinema, digital creation, writing, architecture and craft. Residents get a furnished individual studio in the Marais — workspace with sleeping area, bathroom, kitchenette, Wi-Fi — for three, six or nine months, in fixed consecutive quarters beginning April 2027, July 2027, October 2027 or January 2028. You can state a preference for dates, but the programme may adjust them.
Who pays what is the thing to understand. The Institut francais covers the monthly cost of the studio. Everything else is the responsibility of the partner organisation backing you: a residency stipend of at least EUR 1,100 a month, international travel, health, repatriation and liability insurance, and visa fees. Extras such as rehearsal studios, an accompanying person, group workshops or French classes are down to you.
You cannot apply alone. Applications are submitted by one or more associated partner organisations on your behalf. You must have lived outside French territory continuously for at least five years, be established in a recognised professional practice, be free of other professional commitments for the whole residency, and work independently in French or English at a professional level.
A committee chaired by the Institut francais, including the Cite, the French cultural network abroad, the foreign affairs and culture ministries and outside experts, weighs four things: your professional background, the artistic and intellectual quality of the project, the proposed work plan, and your existing connections to the French and Ile-de-France scenes. Applications close 8 October 2026.
