About this opportunity

Soundweavings is a three-week residency at Banff Centre (March 1–20, 2027) built around cross-cultural collaboration, pairing musicians from traditional and folk backgrounds worldwide with classically trained performers. You get round-the-clock studio access, faculty mentorship, group workshops, a chance to record short demos, and campus housing with a subsidised meal plan, all aimed at giving new collaborations room to actually form rather than just meeting in passing. It's open to individual musicians and ensembles, Canadian or international, aged 18 and up, who can show real accomplishment on a traditional or classical instrument; the catch for non-Canadians is that Banff's programmes don't qualify for a student visa, so you'd enter on a visitor visa instead. The full cost is $8,722, but a standard scholarship covers full tuition plus a quarter of accommodation and meals, leaving most participants paying around $2,762; Canadian Indigenous applicants have tuition, meals and housing covered in full. There's a $65 application fee ($35 for Indigenous applicants). Applying means a two-page CV, a one-page cover letter, up to three performance recordings (ten minutes total), a technical rider, an optional 500-word project proposal, and financial aid paperwork if you want it considered. A jury weighs artistic merit and originality, your existing skill level, what you'd personally gain from the residency, and whether Banff can actually support what you're proposing.
