About this opportunity

A composition competition for symphonic wind band, run by the Valencian federation of music societies with the provincial council of Castellón. Winning works become the set pieces at the following year's provincial band competition, so a prize here means your music is played by every competing band in its section — and published, with the federation covering an edition of up to 1,000 copies distributed to music societies across the province. Open to composers over 18 born in or resident in the Valencian Community; one entry each. Works must be original and unpublished, never performed or broadcast, not the product of a paid commission, and must take the province of Castellón as their subject: its history, towns, monuments or notable figures. Four sections match band sizes, each with its own length, difficulty grade and prize — 71 to 90 players (15 to 20 minutes, grade 4 to 5) for 3,500 euros; 51 to 70 players (12 to 15 minutes) for 2,500; 41 to 50 players (10 to 12 minutes) for 2,000; and 31 to 40 players (8 to 10 minutes) for 1,500. Entries go by post or in person to the federation's Valencia office: three printed copies of the score, the parts, a USB with a PDF and an audio file, and a sealed envelope with your details and CV. Submissions are anonymous and breaking that means exclusion. The jury weighs musical quality and creative merit, and may declare a section void. Exploitation rights transfer to the federation for ten years. The rules are in Spanish.
